We welcome unsolicited submissions of articles and book reviews. We generally do not accept pitches, only completed manuscripts or drafts. Articles should be 3,000 to 6,000 words in length, and book reviews between 1,500 and 3,000 words. Authors may expect a decision within four to six weeks.
As an independent socialist magazine, MR covers a wide range of contemporary issues from a variety of left perspectives. Prospective contributors are encouraged to read recent issues—available for free on our website—for a sense of the magazine’s content and style. We are always seeking submissions on topics such as political economy, ecology, imperialism, race, gender, sexuality, disability, science, education, and labor.
While MR is committed to publishing intellectually rigorous writing, we strongly prefer articles in lively, jargon-free prose, aimed at the educated general reader, that do not assume specialized knowledge. MR does not generally accept submissions written for academic assignments or conferences, unless specifically rewritten and formatted for the magazine and its audience.
We especially welcome submissions from activists, younger scholars, and new writers.
Submissions should follow the Chicago Manual of Style, sixteenth edition. If notes are necessary, please use endnotes rather than footnotes, but it is best to minimize scholarly apparatus as much as possible. Citations should be formatted in the style below:
- Paul A. Baran and Paul M. Sweezy, Monopoly Capital (New York: Monthly Review Press, 1966).
- Albert Einstein, “Why Socialism?,” Monthly Review 1, no. 1 (May 1949): 9–15.
Monthly Review Press is an independent socialist publisher. Through our publishing program we seek to contribute to the critique of capitalism, and document and analyze struggles for a social order based on human need and potential rather than corporate profit. We try to promote rational argument and open debate within a broad socialist culture, rather than advancing the perspectives of any organization or tendency within the socialist camp.
We welcome submission of manuscripts and manuscript proposals which contribute to these aims. Traditionally Monthly Review and Monthly Review Press have had a strong focus on Marxist political economy. We have also published extensively on labor issues, media, feminism, race and imperialism, and political struggles in the Third World. We have also published related work in fields such as urban studies and cultural studies. For an idea of the range of themes MR Press is interested in, please consult our catalog, or back issues of Monthly Review.
We do not have rigid guidelines for submissions, but we expect a clear indication of the nature of the manuscript on the basis of which we can consider it for publication. Some authors prefer to submit a short proposal (at least 4-5 pages) outlining a book's main themes, basic structure, potential readership, and so on. Some submit entire manuscripts. In most cases, we would prefer to receive an outline of the book and one or more chapters, but not more than a third of the whole manuscript. However, we recognize that the most suitable format for submission depends on the nature of the book project, how far work on it has proceeded, the length of the manuscript, the author’s access to copying facilities, and other factors.
You may submit your manuscript using the submission form. Your submission will be acknowledged when it is received; please do not send your submission more than once. You may also mail your submissions to the following address:
