“With Krleža; Against Organized Idiocy”: A Croatian Forum interview with Željko Cipriš

Zeljko Cipriš is the translator of Harbors Rich in Ships: The Selected Revolutionary Writings of Miroslav Krleža, Radical Luminary of Modern World Literature, coming very soon from Monthly Review Press. He was recently interviewed by Rade Dragojević for the Forum, a Croatian weekly, published in Zagreb.

RD: Where did you get the idea to translate Krleža’s work and present it to American readers? Are Krleža’s themes sufficiently universal and understandable to new generations?

JC: I’ve long been interested in left-wing writers…. At the time when he wrote these texts, Krleža was a fiery, rebellious intellectual at the peak of activity. Although I respect the whole of his life’s work, this early period interests me the most….Young Krleža, as we know, writes about imperialist wars, corruption, oligarchy, plutocracy, the miserable life under the dictatorship of capital, and so on. Moreover, he writes from the perspective of a revolutionary socialist. Almost a century later all of those Krleža’s early themes are still critically and tragically topical…”
