In the introduction to an interview with Vijay Prashad, Democracy Now! reminds us that, while the United States blocks vaccine patent rights at the World Trade Organization, limiting vaccine access worldwide, China is engaging in “vaccine diplomacy,” sharing free samples with 53 countries, most of them in the Global South.

Prashad, the author of Washington Bullets begins:

“When he (Biden) says China is a threat, what do they mean? I think here, precision is important. They don’t mean that China is a military threat to the United States, after all, the Chinese military has the capacity to defend its homeland, but is not in any way threatening the United States. In fact, it’s U.S. naval vessels that are sailing very close to the Chinese mainland in so-called “freedom of navigation” sorties….the United States government understands that China’s scientific and electronic developments, particularly in robotics, in telecommunications, in “green technology,” and so on, has far surpassed that of U.S. and European companies, and this is an existential threat as far as the United States is concerned.”
